F1 news: Lewis Hamilton new team-mate, Fernando Alonso loan, Force India confirm signing

Daniel Ricciardo says he would relish the prospect of racing alongside Lewis Hamilton as his team-mate at some point.

Ricciardo is widely regarded as one of the grid’s very best drivers but Red Bull could see him walk away from the team at the end of 2018.

The Australian has less than 12 months left on his contract and is considering his options because he wants to ensure he is in a car that can challenge for a title.

And with Valtteri Bottas also out of contract, there has been speculation that Ricciardo might join Hamilton at Mercedes.

F1 news today features a potential partnership between Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo

“I would like to go against Lewis at some point, irrespective of team situation. That would be fun,” Ricciardo told Racer.

“People will probably call me a liar for this but I would like a fast teammate.

“For two reasons: it’s always going to get more out of yourself, and it’s going to be more of a true evaluation of how good you are and where you stand.”

Fernando Alonso will not allow his World Endurance Championship campaign to interfere with his F1 racing for McLaren.

Alonso announced in January that he would race for Toyota in the WEC, alongside team-mates Sebastian Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, both of whom have F1 experience.

But McLaren boss Zak Brown has insisted that the Spaniard will not be distracted from his day job in F1.

“Fernando is effectively restricted to just driving the [Toyota] race car,” Brown said.

“So as far as commercial appearances, sponsor commitments, things of that nature, it is very minimised.

“His relationship with Toyota – he is on loan from us.

“We came to an arrangement with Toyota and that is to allow him to race the car but not to travel the globe having commercial commitments.

“[It’s] everything from minimising his travel, to any potential sponsor conflicts – Toyota don’t have many on there so there aren’t many sitting there today that are a conflict with McLaren.”

Nicholas Latifi

Nicholas Latifi will be Force India’s reserve driver in 2018

Force India have confirmed that Canada’s Nicholas Latifi will run as their test and development driver in 2018.

Latifi finished fifth for DAMS in Formula 2 last year and spent the 2016 season as a test driver for Renault.

“He will support our simulator programme and work with the team during a number of Friday practice sessions next year,” said team owner Vijay Mallya.

“We have a long track record of bringing on young talented drivers and Nicholas will learn a huge amount as he gets embedded in the team, and looks forward to a career in Formula One.”
