Tiger Woods: Why American legend is looking forward to playing with Phil Mickelson

Tiger Woods will be looking for his third win at The Players Championship

It will be the first time Woods and Mickelson have played in the same group since the 2014 PGA Championship.

The duo will be joined by Rickie Fowler for the opening two rounds of this week’s tournament at TPC Sawgrass.

Tiger Woods is searching for his third career victory at The Player Championship having last won the tournament in 2013.

He finished 55th at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship having returned to golf last November.

And Woods can’t wait to join his long-time rival Mickelson on the course on Thursday.

“I do enjoy it [playing with Mickelson] because we don’t get to do it very often,” Woods said.

“We are normally paired up on the weekend if we are both playing well, and even that’s a rarity.

“I know they tried that first experiment in 2008 [at the U.S. Open], [when world numbers] one, two and three were out together, and that was a blast for both of us.

“That was one of the very few times, if not the first time we played together the first two rounds. We don’t get the opportunity to do it very often.

“We’ve been going at it for the better part of over 20 years and it’s fun for both of us to be able to do that.”

Woods has won 14 major tournaments while Mickelson has five to his name.

Woods’ last major victory came at the US Open in 2008 while his playing partner for the week tasted success at Muirfield in the 2013 Open.
